Day One – NaPoWriMo 2017

Here’s the background for today’s poetry prompt from

“Today’s interview is with Kay Ryan, whose spare, tightly-rhymed work makes each poem a small, witty, philosophical puzzle. You can find more background on Ryan’s life and work here, and read one of her poems here.

And finally, our (optional) prompt. In honor of today’s interviewee, I’d like to challenge you to write a Kay-Ryan-esque poem: short, tight lines, rhymes interwoven throughout, maybe an animal or two, and, if you can manage to stuff it in, a sharp little philosophical conclusion.”

I was having lazy day – not really motivated to do much of anything. Sometimes it’s hard to be witty and philosophical (and to be honest I don’t really understand the poem that was used for today’s example) but here’s my attempt.

Sunrise Stillness

Hot pink rising sun
pierces the darkness
tints morning clouds
a rosy hue,
sears away
the edge of night
all stars fade from view.

In this quiet, stillest
time of day
too soon gone – – –
everything is possible.
Soon the whirl of the world
will start.
So guard this
quiet, stillness
in your heart.
